aquela.com: What's New?
December
13, 2003
- Finally wrote about the Player's Guide to Faerûn and
Eberron on the James' Work page. Also
included a "What I'm working on now" teaser.
- Added a "What I'm playing" blurb to the Active
Games page.
- Killed the message boards. Sorry, folks. I'll try to get better
aboutanswering email.
September 1, 2003
June 14, 2003
- Added some notes about Incursion, Draconomicon,
and Book of Exalted Deeds to the James'
Work page.
- Added a tiny bit about Origins and GenCon Indy to the main
page.
- Tried to purge machine-readable appearances of my email address
from the site, replacing them with my mailto
page. Sorry for the inconvenience.
- Miscellaneous tidying.
March 20, 2003
- City of the Spider Queen has been
nominated for an Origins Award
for Best Roleplaying Adventure!

- Minor redesign to the whole site. You'll notice the navigation
bar above is different, and leads to the major divisions of
content in the roleplaying resources (instead of, in some cases,
leading out of roleplaying resources entirely). You'll also
start seeing it on more pages as the redesign works its way
through the site...
- A lot of tweaking in Aquela.
A lot of small changes got made in the course of reformatting
the pages. You'll find updated rules for crabfolk,
pahari, and
selkies,
some historical maps,
and a number of smaller changes.

- Gearing up for the launch of my lunchtime campaign, I gave
it a name: the Mahasarpa Campaign,
and updated its page. Highlight: the map
page.
June 15, 2001
May 29, 2001
- Significant updates to Petroyeska,
of all things:the beginnings of 3e character information (races
are sketchy, classes
are better, including my 3e version of Joel Hahn's angelic orders;
also three new clerical domains),
some maps, and
an adventure/campaign outline.
(Note: the 2nd edition character information is still online
here.)
May 26, 2001
- Shield of Faith character
information and introduction
addedfor real this time. I don't know whether I actually
did upload them in the past, only to have them mysteriously
disappear from the server, or simply forgot to actually upload
them, but they're there now.
May 17, 2001
May 15, 2001
- Added the full-size map of the Duqan
archipelago to the Aquela section.
- Created an email announcement list so you can be notified
every time I update the site. Sign up on the main
page (in the lower right).
May 13, 2001
April 14, 2001
- No real significant updates, but a lot of shuffling stuff
around... have a look at the links on what used to be my
3e page.
- Well, I guess this is significant: a text dump of the Hypercard
Imperium Romanum adventure
log. Now, someday I'll turn that into a CGI script...
- Which reminds me, I've never pointed out that all character
sheets should now be displayed by a CGI script. Developing an
online character database has been a dream of mine for years,
and I finally got around to doing it. Want to see it in action?
Have a look at Sanaril.
Yes, I know the graphics aren't perfect yet.
April 12, 2001
April 5, 2001
- Another update to the Forghul campaign
journal.
- Also fixed some links (why didn't anyone tell me they were
broken? :( ), including the OA cover mockup on the main
page and the link to Sanaril's new character sheet on the
Forghul page.
- Added links to the Stannex and Monte Cook's page on the main
page.
March 31, 2001
March 29, 2001
- Some teasers about Oriental Adventures on the main
page.
March 7, 2001
- Some new maps of Aquela
(world and Duqan archipelago).
March 6, 2001
- Some restructuring going on over at the home
page... My thought is that I will begin phasing out my 3e
page (and its archive),
while trying to maintain active and separate journals for my
various games (currently including Forghul
and at-work playtesting, as well as the sporadic Imperium
Romanum campaign.)
- I updated Sanaril's character
sheet now that he's 10th level.
March 2, 2001
- Mm... psionics... I love the new Psionics Handbook.
It's no big deal, but here's what ShadowDancer
(my wife Amy's halfling rogue/psion from the Imperium
Romanum campaign) looks like with the new rules.
- Also, here's Delkir,
the dwarf psion Dave Noonan played the one time I ran an Aquela
adventure for our Monday night group. (Gotta get that started
again someday...)
February 21, 2001
- A hasty update to my 3e page:
more Forghul madness!
January 26, 2001
- A lengthy update to my 3e page:
Forghul campaigning, playtesting an Adventure Path module, and
how monster Challenge Ratings are really determined.
January 7, 2001
December 29, 2000
- An update to my 3e page...
finally talking about my recent gaming.
November 27, 2000
- I tried to do an update about my recent gaming, but all that
came out was a rant about reviews
of the Monster Manual.
- I did manage some minor updates to my
list of publications, including the new cover of The
Speaker in Dreams. I keep picking up my copy of that adventure,
looking at the name on the bottom of the cover, showing it to
my wife, and saying, "I wrote this!" I'm a stunned
animal.
October 14, 2000
- Three gaming sessions' worth of updates to my 3e
page.
September 24, 2000
September 21, 2000
September 18, 2000
- A new entry on my 3e page describes
the last three gaming sessions I've played in.
- I also put up a character sheet for Osuno,
the 6th-level monk I played on 9/10.
September 11, 2000
September 10, 2000
- Added an NPC character sheet for Alyssia,
a hero of Night. Alyssia appeared (in 2nd Edition format) in
DRAGON #263, in my article "Heaven's Trump." Shi'ara
(from Old Ogden Abbey) is
coming soon!
- Updated the search engine index.
September 7, 2000
- Added 3e stats for four NPCs in the Night campaign information
I posted the other night (on Tellen
Rapids): Andrew Ostler, Arthur o'the Woods, Broze, and Kozmit,
the half-fiend baron of the town.
- And a long narrative update to my 3e
page. Also split past entries on that page onto an archive
page to reduce your loading time and (I hope) my overall
site traffic.
- Today is my birthday. I'm 32. :)
September 5, 2000
- Some new Night campaign information.
A little change of perspective: I originally put up all this
campaign info thinking that my players could use it, so I put
up no details about the world that their player characters wouldn't
know. Of course, the rest of the world makes a lot more use
of this site than my players, so I'm adopting a more open-door
policy... I've got a bee in my bonnet about Night (call it a
spiritual revival...), so I hope to get more information up
soon. I wish I didn't have to go to sleep now... (Thanks to
K-LOVE for tonight...)
August 22, 2000
- Update to my 3e page. Nothing
too exciting, I fear...
August 20-21, 2000
- I'm back from vacation, on my own computer again, and able
to upload some of the 3e stuff I've had in the works for a while.
Have a look at Night character
information and bits and pieces of Imperium Romanum character
information (particularly fauns
and hattí).
I had hoped to have a lot more work done on all my campaign
settings by now, but instead we're looking at piecemeal updating
for a while now, I think. Sorry about that.
- My first Wizards of the Coast products are now available for
pre-order from amazon.com! Have a look at Monsters
of Faerûn and The
Speaker in Dreams! For that matter, I've also got design
credits in Sword
& Fist and the new Forgotten
Realms campaign setting. I added these and other items to
my Buy Games page.
- I also added my forthcoming products and articles to my writing
credits page.
August 14, 2000
- I've uploaded the new Aquela, revised for the new D&D.
So far, only character information has changed, and that's less
complete than I had hoped. Have
a look, then tell me what
you think!
- GenCon is over, and I'm heading off for a week of vacation.
I'm hoping to do a number of things while I'm on the road, including
my GenCon report, adding my forthcoming products to my buy games
page, and refining the new Aquela stuff as much as possible.
Unfortunately, my 3e information for Night is on my home computer,
so I won't be able to update that until I get back.
August 6, 2000
- I'm heading off to GenCon soonread all about it on my
3e page.
July 15, 2000
- Updated my 3e page.
- Posted the Imperium Romanum "DM
Guide"tips for new DMs in the campaign. [Thanks
James (jkosub@toadmail.com)please send me your new e-mail
address!]
July 13, 2000
June 30, 2000
- Added links to Star Wars Roleplaying Game products on amazon.com
to my Buy Games page.
- I updated my 3e page on June
26.
June 17, 2000
May 24, 2000
- More of Fik's adventures in my Third
Edition journal.
- Added UK and Deutschland prices and links for the new Player's
Handbook to my Buy Games Online
page. Hope that's helpful to the Europeans in the audience...
May 20, 2000
May 13, 2000
May 12, 2000
- Petroyeska is here at
last! That "Character Information" link is finally
live, and all the information I have on character creation in
Petroyeska is there (except kit information, which I couldn't
bring myself to put time into, knowing it will be completely
obsolete in three months).
- Now you can read "How
Night came to be..." on the Night
message board. (Thanks for the nudge, Andrew!)
- A new piece in the Religion &
Roleplaying section: some reflections on faith
and horror. I know this section is full of effectively dead
links; I hope to clean it up soon. But I can only do so much
at once...
- My list of published articles and adventures is now my list
of publication credits, as I've
added the minor credits I have in upcoming Wizards of the Coast
products. As new products appear in the Wizards catalog, I'll
try to add the ones that are mine... and as they appear on amazon,
I'll try to add them to my "Buy
games" page as well.
May 10, 2000
- The "Buy games" page
is finally updated and chock full o' forthcoming new D&D
products.
- I am trying to answer messages on the message
boards...
May 7, 2000
- On the Religion & Roleplaying
message board, I posted a series of ponderings on the topic
of how to make a roleplaying game Christian (somewhat distinct
from the related question, how to make a Christian roleplaying
game...). I posted it there, rather than on the Religion
& Roleplaying page, because I want a lot of feedback
and discussion about it. Interested in the topic? Have a visit.
- Added a section I just never finished writing for my Alternity:
Top Secret article that appears in this
month's Dragon: A section on Espionage Organizations. It's
still sketchy, but the beginning is good... And it's already
much more up-to-date than the similar list in the old Top Secret
rulebook I have!
- Added a Ravenloft adventure hook to the Features
page: The Crescent Moon
- Jumping on the bandwagon, I added a Third
Edition D&D page. It's my random impressions of the
game so far, written much too late at night.
March 18, 2000
- Not much... I am busily at work at Wizards of the Coast, while
continuing to write for DRAGON and DUNGEON. The work I'm doing
noweven outtakesI can't put up here, because it's
all Third Edition. Rest assured that when Third Edition hits
the stores (August 10, 2000), I'll be putting up a whole bunch
of new materialincluding 3e conversions for Aquela and
Night (probably the other worlds as well, when I get to them).
December 23, 1999
December 19, 1999
December 10, 1999
- I've been doing some restructuring and redesign, with the
ultimate aim of making aquela.com a roleplaying resource site
first and foremost. If you try going to the site's root, you'll
find yourself back in roleplaying resources. Links to my multimedia
and web design work, as well as my musical explorations, are
in the roleplaying header now, which you'll start seeing on
more pages. You can get to the page about me (and pictures of
my family) by clicking on my name up there in the top bar. (I'll
make that more intuitive soon.)
- Added "Alcimenides'
Dream," a short adventure for the Hercules & Xena
game, to the gaming features
section.
December 7, 1999
- Yes, it's true... I landed a job as a junior game designer
at Wizards
of the Coast. Starting sometime in January, I'll be working
for Rich Baker on the D&D Worlds team. Please note that
this news does not make any of the material on this site "official"
or change its status in any way.
November 21, 1999
- Cleaned up some Night
pagesadded a style sheet, improved graphics. No big deal,
but at least I'm thinking about the campaign and putting some
work into the site again!
November 14, 1999
November 12, 1999
- Updated articles list.
I'm in the December Dragon, coming soon, and have a short bit
in "Horrors of the Z'bri," a sourcebook for Tribe
8. Don't buy it on my account, particularly if you have a weak
stomach.
- Fixed a broken link to the Night
introduction (thanks Glil-tharn). Also replaced most
occurrences of "tanar'ri" with "demons,"
prepping for Third Edition.
- Coming soon: my unpublished work for the Hercules & Xena
roleplaying game! (I promised my sister-in-law...)
November 6, 1999
August 23, 1999
August 17, 1999
Wow!
Added search and message
board functionality to this site! Please join in the
discussions!
August 16, 1999
- Updated this list with a few small changes I've made in the
last few months.
- What would you like to see me work on (either on this site
or in the pages of Dragon)? Send
me e-mail! (Please don't send me anonymous mail or mail
I can't reply to. That annoys me.)
- Curious about Third Edition D&D? Take a look at Eric
Noah's page (much more informative than the official
site so far).
- Yet another new home page
in this section.
August 13, 1999
July 24, 1999
May 24, 1999
May 23, 1999
- Added an item to the Masque of the Red Death FAQ,
listing Internet resources for historical maps.
May 22, 1999
May 20, 1999
- Replaced the new Main Page
with a Flash-based navigation. Please let
me know if you encounter trouble with it.
- Added a placeholder screen for Confederate
Earth, my first Alternity campaign to go online. (Besides
Gothic Earth, that is...)
May 4, 1999
April 1, 1999
March 27, 1999
March 23, 1999
- Fixed broken links on the Masque articles
page (thanks, Bobby).
February 10, 1999
February 4, 1999
- Added complete text and maps for 3 adventures submitted to
Dungeon Adventures. They are:
- Added an early manuscript, "Bringing
the Horror Home," to the Gaming
Features area. (Links to the 3 adventures are in that
area, too.)
January 21, 1999
- Added information on more forthcoming publications to the
articles page, along with
a disclaimer that future publications are subject to change.
:)
January 20, 1999
- Added some preliminary information for Gothic
Earth villains under Alternity rules.
- Added some advertising (for myself...) to this page and the
new one. Sorry about that, but I'm getting a lot of hits to
this roleplaying section and virtually none to the part that's
paying for it. Hate it? Tell
me.
December 10, 1998
- Added character-generation information for the Imperium
Romanum campaign. There's a lot there! Three new races,
two new classes, lots of kits. It's all very rough and unedited,
and rather old, but a lot of fun.
December 8, 1998
November 13, 1998
October 26, 1998
October 20, 1998
- Added a link to TSR's preview of my article, "With a Twist"
(in the November Dragon, on sale now!) to my articles
page.
- Added a reference to the Masque adventure in the latest Dungeon
to the Masque articles
list.
